In the fall of 1918, my Great Grandma Agnes was pregnant with my Grandpa Frank. The Spanish flu had hit their small town and despite school closures and isolation, Agnes contracted the flu at about seven months pregnant. Grandpa Edward‘s sister, Millie, left her own children in the care of her husband and despite also being about seven months pregnant came and cared for Grandma Agnes. Millie was able to treat Agnes back to health and a healthy baby was born on Christmas Eve. Millie continued to help sick members of her community until she finally contracted the flu just before her baby girl’s birth. Both mother and baby passed away the day after her birth as a result of flu complications.
