When I was 11 we took my Grandpa Eliason to Denmark to find the tiny village of Fristrup in the hamlet of Hjørring where his Grandpa, Martin Svend, was born. Fristrup was a handful of homes and farms. I remember, standing at the edge of one of the farms, picking their snap peas with my grandpa, and him saying he thought his grandpa must have been crazy to leave such a beautiful place and come to the deserts of Utah (where my Grandpa was a lawyer and farmer.)

Martin Svend immigrated to Utah about 5 years after the original windmill was built. I imagine his work in Hjørring would have taken him to this windmill at some point even if it was not the actual mill he worked in.

Fristrup in the hamlet of Hjørring, Denmark is where my great great grandpa, Martin Svend, was born. When I was 11 we took my Grandpa Eliason to find his grandpa’s tiny village and we stumbled upon this nearby windmill. We thought that farming in the deserts of Utah must have been heartbreaking for Martin Svend, who had left green Denmark at the age of 29, about 5 years after the original windmill was built.
