Growing up in New Mexico, I loved seeing storyteller dolls in the galleries and museums. They looked like a grandma with grandkids crawling all over as she tell stories. They are actually grandpas, but in my print it is a grandma telling stories mostly from my childhood.
When I was 4 my grandma told my brother and I that Pegasus was a flying fish, so we made up a great song, a duet really, about Pegasus being sick. It was pretty good for a 4 and 8 year old.
Coyote is a Native American trickster who spilled the stars across the sky. I always loved seeing coyotes in my neighborhood growing up, even though they ate my brothers’ pet ducks. In my piece, Coyote is carrying moonbeams home in a jar and there is a pig swinging on a star - all from that song that I thought was magical when I was small.
The snakes are checking out the tree of life, and the bats are the flying foxes that fill the trees in Sydney’s botanical gardens then fly to the harbor bridge each night to eat the bugs swarming the lights (one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen.)
